Does the Department of Education accredit colleges and courses?
No. By law, the Department of Education is only required to keep an updated list of institutions that are accredited, as well as a list of recognized accreditation agencies. However, the Department of Education is responsible for determining whether such agencies are reliable authorities in higher education and training excellence. Once an accrediting agency is recognized, any institutions accredited by them will also be recognized by the Department of Education. The Department of Education will also recognize State agencies that are responsible for approving vocational and training programs and schools, as well as nursing education programs. State agencies must also meet the same standards and undergo the same evaluation process as accrediting associations.
